
The Institute of Eco-Museal Research Tulcea is defined as a permanent public institution which serves the society and unify under its care archaeological bases, memorial houses and local museums.
The Institute is founded in 1993 through the reorganization of all the Tulcea County museums. Its history is obviously longer. In 1950, the “Danube Delta” Museum, having four sections - history and archaeology, ethnography, natural sciences and fine arts was organized. Subsequently, in 1975, a special pavilion, later on extended with another building, has been built for the section of history and archaeology in the Independence Monument Park. Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art have been organized in separate buildings, the first one in 1972 and the second in 1989.
The Institute of Eco-Museal Research is subordinated to the Tulcea County Council. Its activity is financed from central or local budget, depending on the case, as well as from its own income which sources are the fees for the services, the donations and sponsorships or other specific activities.
The Institute promotes the concept of eco-museal research, aspect which implies an interdisciplinary and also multidisciplinary approach of its specific activities which are the administration, conservation and valorization of the local museal and natural patrimony. The new strategy of the institute takes into consideration the fact that the cultural product must be developed in an integrative context which has to involve the education, the tourism, the regional development, the cross border and transnational co-operation, targeting the creation of multiplying effects through pluridisciplinary actions.
The modernity of the investigation means and methods, as well as the actuality of the research themes are reflected in:
- permanent development of the museums;
- organization of exhibitions and scientific events with educational purpose;
- elaboration of coherent strategies for the protection and conservation of the habitats and species;
- editing and publishing informative materials.
Following the European policies and strategies regarding the status of the museum in the community, the Institute of Eco-Museal Research Tulcea has as main target to change itself radically, from a passive into an active factor of the social life, a factor capable to add an essential contribution to the sustainable regional development.
